I always enjoy reading your historical posts King :) Thanks for sharing them with us! Pretty cool that your great great grandfather was married to General Lee's niece , and strange about the slaves dying because of cold up north - I haven't heard that , but it makes sense.
You have an amazing collection of oral history/traditions and you're a good story teller. I'd love to buy you a cup of coffee or a cold brew and shoot the bull or go fishing sometime.
Re: Roach / Golden Shiners , I'm sure there are some in the lake. We have everything else. Most of my experience with them has been further up on the creeks , but that doesn't mean much. Right now there are so many shad that I wonder if they could become established because of competition.
Schoolie size Stripers are always fun when they are busting , but lately I've been looking for LLF's (Elfs) - Lonely Large Fish. Something about SML makes the bigger Stripers more solitary than what you see in the ocean. I assume it's food or water temp related , maybe even a problem related to the parasites that are still present. Might be genetically superior fish that survive to get big in the lake now.
I caught five rainbow trout yesterday , lost one that would have went 4 pounds or so. :):) Freshwater...:(
If I'm not around over the next week or two , Merry Christmas! I might have a report from FL after the New Year.
