Flounder Fishing

If you do make sure you loosen the drag, I've lost a rod like that before. I had a bigger bait out there for awhile and had no luck with it so I reeled it into the drop off right at the beach instead of taking it out of the water like I should have done. I figured nothing was around since the bait had been out there for a long time. I went off casting lures for bluefish, I heard something and looked back to see the rod bent all the way over close to the sand and I was surprised the rod or line didn't break. I had the sand spike buried deep but it didn't hold before I could get there. I think at the time I was using 30# test Berkley Trilene Big Game but have now switched to 20# test for the bigger baits and 15# test for the rest, 10# test for casting lures. The 30# test was catching the wind too much on the more windy days and pulling the sinkers loose, I still use it for leaders.
You could also do some flounder fishing in the surf with that smaller rod, I use a strip of cut bait or squid on a flounder rig. Move around throwing the rig out there and go really slow along the bottom, most are under the size limit but can be a lot of them. I make my own flounder rig, the egg sinker one on the link below is good.
