Carolla fishing

We will be down June 14-21 and will be in the Carolla area. I've read that the beaches are rather flat and surf fishing isn't particularly good unless you go down to the research pier.
Typically my son and I fish cut bait on the bottom but this is the first time we have been this early coming down so we don't know if there is any difference. We're usually down after labor day. I've also read that the bloodworm fish bites work nearly as well as the real ones. Spent a minor fortune on real bloodworms last year and only caught little fish. Cut bait didn't work and shrimp were a bust as well. I'm going to try a fish finder rig this year for the first time instead of the typical bottom rig. Don't care what we catch as we are totally catch and release people.
Any and all advice is welcome and appreciated.
