That sounds about right for the length of a shock leader , maybe a little on the long side. So much of it depends on personal preference and what you are most comfortable with. You can always shorten the leader if you need to , so I would start longer , and shorten it until you have the length you like. Also keep an eye on knots and abrasions on the line and retie as needed , nothing is worse than losing a good fish because of something that is preventable.
As far as knots go , I'm not familiar with a " water knot " , but knots are a matter of personal preference also. I know people that use uni to uni knots ,blood knots , no name knots etc. etc. So I guess I would recommend using what you can tie best. Personally , I've had good luck with the " Albright knot " , seems to go through the guides better , but that's just my personal preference.
I think Berkley has some info on knots and knot strength on their website , I remember seeing a really good site a while back , but I can't recall what it was. If I can find it again , I'll post a link.
