shock leaders

I read on the "newcomers to saltwater fishing" link that you need your shock leader to be 2 times as long as your rod plus 3 turns of the reel,thats seems alot. I'm curious about the knot getting hung up in the eyes of your rod.I've been practicing a water knot and I got it down pretty good.Is this knot adequate or should I practice another one?
