I do have trouble with blossom end rot on the tomatoes, squash and cucumbers usually early in the season, blight sometimes on the tomatoes and peppers. Seemed like letting the soil dry out good helps. That's something I'm trying to figure out. I don't water the plants if it's been raining off and on consistantly, during the hot part of summer I try to soak them every day right before dark when the soil gets real dry and the leaves are wilting.
I started out using plastic 5 gallon buckets with holes drilled in the bottom buried in the ground filled with dirt from the store which is what others are doing. Then I built box frames out of boards set in the ground to try to keep the wire grass and green briers out and filled them with mulch. The recycling center in Kill Devil Hills over where the monument is at gives mulch away for free or did if you have a pick up truck they just dumped the mulch in until it's full, mine was mostly from christmas trees. The stuff got a lot of little brown mushrooms on it the first year then was alright, turned to dirt. I plow it over with a shovel every year and put some leaf mulch in and on it from a pile of old leaves. I've noticed too much can cause blight.
