I asked a similar question....

Here (below somewhere) and on another board.
I got a bit of advice (here's a few tidbits):
"Abu Garcias are good for the money".
"Check ebay for a used Penn 704z"
"Abu Garcia Cardinal 170SW series reels"
"Penn Slammer 460(can be had NIB for $120-150). They are bullet proof and have very nice drags and all metal frames. Next would be a Shimano Baitrunner 6000D".
"Buy once, cry once. Get a Shimano Baitrunner slap some Power Pro on there and call it a day"I was asking about outfitting a cheapy 8' and a cheap Shakespeare 10' surf rod. The longer rod HAD a Shakespeare Alpha on it (brother in law broke it...but not entirely his fault as it had been stored forever).
Here's a reply I thought was worth putting in whole due to the poster's experience:
" I'm a saltwater fishing guide and have been an editor for a number of saltwater fishing magazines. I've also sold retail fishing tackle.
That being said, Sheakespeare is junk tackle.
For surf, go with at least a 12-14' rod, particularly for OBX. You'll need a long rod for big fish past the sandbar.
Also use a light tackle 7-8' rod for in close at the trough for whiting and croaker.
For the pier, keep it short and stiff. 6-8' max with a heavy action. Also get a bridge/pier net.
Try fishing braid, rather than mono. You'll get more strength and longer casts, but will have to learn a knot or two.
Use fluorocarbon for leader material and learn to tie line-to-line knots. Try to eliminate any terminal tackle (swivels) if you can.
snip
DON'T LIP BLUEFISH!!! "And, finally....
I watched Ebay and got a Penn Slammer (mentioned above) for $100, and a pair of Quantum Bluerunners (the pair was under $50)....so now I'm looking for a rod or two...
