I grew up fishing the New River in WV. Used to set trot lines and catch smallies all day.
I've heard a lot of good stuff about the trout in the Holston river from a friend. My favorite place to trout fish is around Richwood , WV. Lots of clear , cold water up in the mountains. Something like 7 or 8 stocked streams , most notably the Cranberry and Cherry rivers and also Summit Lake which gets enough ice in the winter to ice fish.
The streams around Richwood are one of the great success stories of modern fishery management. In the 50's they were pretty much a dead zone because of logging and acid rain , but now they've been restored to the point where trout can hold over year round.
Lots of cool places to go in the National Forest up that way , if you ever have a chance to make the drive. I wouldn't recommend going in the winter when there's snow or the dead of summer when the copperheads and timber rattlers are running around.
