What kind of fish are you looking to catch? The Outer Banks is all about fabulous fall fishing. I would have a variety of bait, bloodworms, shrimp, squid, and if you catch small blues cut them up for cut bait for drum. By cut them up I mean cut off the tail and other fins, then cut the head off and generally I use the body as one peice. Bout any small fish will do.
As far as guides, I have used the fellow who advertises on this sight and he is very good click on the header for Beach Bum Fishing.

Good luck and have fun, I'm going down This weekend for a week and can't wait.
