I'm in " The Mountains of VA " too , most of the time anyway.

In the sound , I would recommend the Canada ( or Canadian) hole off of Hatteras Island. Watch for snakes. I've caught a lot of fish there.

I would recommend one of the piers anywhere on the OBX until you know what you're doing and what you want to catch. A lot of people won't agree with that , but piers are a great place to learn.

Some of the best fisherman I know fish live bait rigs and drum rigs off of the end of OBX piers year round
