As I mentioned earlier, I like to fish jigs with grubs for river Smallmouths. Over the years I've found that my favorite retrieve is no action at all. I cast it upstream and let it dead drift at river current speed. All I do is reel up the slack line that occurs as the baits come back at me. Most bites are easy to detect but when I watch the line, I hook up more. Most bites come just before the lure or bait is directly in front of me. A key thing here is remembering to reel down to the fish before setting the hook. Getting all of the slack out will greatly improve hookups.
And yes Josh, I too think that twister tail grubs are an awesome bait. You mentioned Mr. Twister. I almost forgot about them. Do you know if they were the first curly tail?
