It's actually a little low - any more water coming out of the dam would have the catwalk covered. When I was younger and more surefooted , we used to wade out onto the catwalk to fish. Always had a stringer tied to my belt to drag catfish back to the bank. Creepy feeling being out there when they open a gate on the dam and more water starts coming out!

I used to fish there all the time. In 1985 when the big flood hit , the water was coming out so fast it was almost even with the spillway. All the gates were open and the lake (Bluestone on the New River) was almost high enough to come over the flood gates at the top of the dam. I wish I had pictures from back then , it was certainly something to see.

That's a good spot for Channel Catfish and Smallmouth Bass. I might go try sometime in late March or April. Pic below gices a little better perspective on the dam itself :
