I've always used minnows , helgremites , softshell crawfish or night crawlers. Most anything that swims in a river will hit those. Minnows would be my first choice for smallmouth unless there was a big hatch of helgremites happening.
With artificials , I've always liked pumpkinseed grubs or Cordell big O's in silver , Heddon torpedos if they're hitting topwater , and tube jigs in the winter.
Up there where I fish the New River has been going through a cycle. In the 90's , smallmouth were everywhere. By the early 2000's , Muskie had moved in and wiped out a lot of the little smallmouth - I had big muskies swipe at small bass several times. Now the Muskies don't seem to be around as much , but big 8-10 pound walleyes have moved in and smallmouth are making a comeback. The catfish have managed to stick around through all of it.
This is giving me a bad case of spring fever!
