There's a lot of misconceptions about things that people will argue with you about that are a fact and also people just don't listen, it's not easy to explain. I think part of your answer involves weather changes and over fishing which I like to avoid too. I'll give it a try.

Sometimes the blues will bite anything and sometimes they are very picky.

Bunker is what the northerners call menhaden. There's a lot of former tourists that are locals that came from up north. Fatback is what the southerners call menhaden. I'm from the south, I just call it menhaden so you know what I mean.

What I said was sting rays that are on the move in a school not skates, I don't know why could be the same reason cobia follow rays. I was talking about using a small live spot for bait not catching them.

Spot will bite anything if they are hungry like during the fall and the bait is cut into real tiny pieces for them.

To me there is 2 kinds of big bluefish now, a northern version that likes colder water like stripers and a southern version that likes warmer water. I'm pretty sure this much is right.

I believe the ones caught during early winter and early spring are the originals from the 70s that used to blitz the beach. Those still have the birds on them and blitz the beach but it's rare and usually it's peanut size menhaden chased up on the beach not trout anymore. Their numbers are a whole lot lower and getting worst and their pattern has moved more into winter so I would guess either weather or over fishing. People used to throw them up on the beach and leave them, the worst I saw of this was at Oregon Inlet the park service had to clean it up with bull dozers.

You can still target those around Thanksgiving or the middle to end of December is better at Oregon Inlet. Try from first light to sunrise on a northeast wind at Coquina Beach or Pea Island within sight of the rock jetty at Oregon Inlet look for the birds. There's some in March but you have to be in the right place at the right time, they used to show up in April a long time ago. The big blues still like to come in at the same places in Kitty Hawk as they did in the 70s, at the Black Pelican and Winks.

I think the big blues in May is something new that's doing well probably because they are a little different like the warmer water and usually don't have the birds on them. They might not be migrating further north and are going into the sound to breed during the summer then going south to Florida for the winter. I don't know how it all works, I'm just saying I look at the big blues as 2 different groups and that helps me figure them out whether I'm right or wrong.
