I'll bite. I may or may not have shared this one before , but it's from my grandfather and he might have been pulling my leg....
In the mountains where I grew up , Oysters were a delicacy. Being far removed from the coast they were expensive to transport in the days before refrigerated trucks were common. Around Christmas , all of the family would have a gallon of oysters stored in the bottom of a rain barrel (along with a bottle or two of liquor) to keep cold.
One year , one of my grandfather's uncles had been working somewhere around the Chesapeake Bay and managed to come across two washtubs full of oysters in the shell - still alive. He loaded them into the trunk of his old Buick and headed for the hills.
As the story was told to me , somewhere between the coast and home an awful noise started coming from the rear of the car. Grandpa's uncle thought the rear end of the car had failed and pulled over. After stopping and turning the engine off , he noticed that the noise continued.
Opening the trunk to investigate , he found that about half of the water had sloshed out of the washtubs and the oysters were "chattering" trying to get back in the water and making an "awful racket".
Supposedly , he filled the tubs back up with water - silencing the noisy bivalves and headed home. When he got home they had a big party , eating the oysters and drinking and I assume laughing about the story he told.
I always believed the stories told to me by my granddad , but have always been suspicious of this one. He's a heck of a story teller with a great sense of humor , so he might have got me with this one :)
