I do not want to make light of the environmental issues on any such project,but I have come to feel that it serves as an easy excuse (one that the lawmakers do not have to really make) because the real issue is, in my opinion, where they will get the $$$. So if the money is the problem, isn't it nice they have these environmental issues to blame for the failure to make decisions and get the project in gear?? I was reading an OBX fishing book published some time in the late 80's...maybe 1986. It had a statement that the bridge was "scheduled for replacement being completed (or started) in early 2000". Eight years later all we have is some shored up pilings and several ton of "bridge crumble" on the bottom of the inlet. I have seen the bottom side of a lot of bridges but never one in the condition of the Bonner.
