unfortunately kevin, the bridge is crumbling into the ocean. all you have to do is get in a boat underneath it and look up. there a giant chunks of concrete missing and places where the rebar is exposed. pieces fall off every day. ive seen small chunks myself and reports indicate pieces as large as basketballs falling off. There is no ferry service for a number of reasons. 1. because of the nature of the inlet (ie. constantly shifting shoals and shallow water), a ferry could not be operated from one side to the other in any short distance. 2. there is no place to load/ unload cars, meaning a place would have to be built on the pea island national wildlife refuge. 3 the traffic flow across that bridge is so exponential, especially during the tourist season, that a ferry service could not keep up.
