My understanding of it is the new bridge is going to parallel the old bridge but curve out into the sound more to help prevent sand from being washed out from around the bridge pilings. The new bridge hasn't been started and the hold up has to do with Pea Island on the south side and the Fish and Wildlife Service.

The new bridge won't have a catwalk but part of the old bridge on the south side was suppose to be left for fishing. The water is only about 1 foot deep behind Pea Island.

Same thing is happening with the other bridge that is suppose to be built going to Corolla, they don't want to cut down some old pine trees in a swamp.
