The wd 40 and washing is something I do to all my reels. Prolongs their life.The best thing is to buy reels that are made for saltwater.Have several Silstar BT series reels 20-30-40 I bought 20 years ago paid $50-$75 for them. Lots of money at that time. They are still are like new because they have a graphite body and stainless spools.Bought a Garcia longcast 4000 series reel about 3 years ago for $89.00 and the salt has about eaten it up.
Silstar hasen't made anything good since the BT series.
Penn and Shanamo make some good inexpensive salt reels.Cheep reels don't last no matter what you do for them.Ask what the reel is made of before you buy for salt.
