You can catch puppy drum in the spring from the surf or from the little bridge on the Nags Head / Manteo causeway. Don't have the big drum in the spring like the point or Hatteras Inlet. The little bridge might be the best way to go if the puppy drum are there and if you can figure out the best time and wind. I'd check with Fishing Unlimited on the causeway.

In the surf the puppy drum like sand fleas and it will depend on where the sand fleas are at. They could be in the wash or on the outer bar where the waves are breaking.

My casts vary with the wind speed and direction from not far over the drop off to 3/4 a pier length with the same weight and rod. I think the distance casting techniques help but I always worry I'm going to break the rod.

I'd try both, way out and up close in or near the drop off at the wreck. You could catch a different fish on each cast or get into a run of something you want or don't want to catch. The beach patrol will stop and say something to you if you have glass bottles on the beach.
