Last night got into some decent sized sea mullet (10-14”) until a Car pulls up beside me and everyone piles out and into the water right beside my line. Was fishing two rods and dead smack in between, a school of bunker snowed up. I just turned to grab a snagging hook from my truck to get some bait and like a flick of a switch, it turned on. Fish jumping, gulls diving the whole nine yards. Grabbed my lure rod and headed toward the school except now they’ve moved north right around the people swimming who were taking great delight in the breaking fish. I ran over to the dad who had just came out of the water and told him he best get his family out of the water if sharks are chasing the bait. A guy died up here in corolla a number of years ago when he went swimming with the finger mullet around the same some of day and gotten eaten by a bull shark. When they got out of the water I made a cast to the back side of the moving school and fish on. It bit through my 30lb leader and I lost it right in the wash. Smaller fish so it was a blue or Spanish. Then just like it started it stopped. Went back to the dad to explain why I told him get out of the water and he was less than appreciative. Whatever, next time I’ll let you be statistic.
This morning couldn’t even loose my bait. Managed one 10lb Ray. Heard they were getting nice puppy drum during the day. Family went shopping so I fished all day. Not much happening until late in the day. Found a school of nice sea mullet. Boxed a few then got the mother of all sea mullet at 19”. Never seen or caught one that big. Then I got the mother of all birds nests in my conventional reel.
Still trying to figure out how to cast a level wind. My reels supposed to have magnets to prevent backlash but I don’t know how it’s supposed to work cause it doesn’t.
