From the upper Chesapeake: these large commercial fish oil processors use ships equipped with what are essentially giant vacuum cleaners to sweep the Bay of important bait fish like alewives, menhaden, anchovies, various shad and whatever else they can take. These are mostly turned in to fish oil supplements and fertilizer. These vacuums are of course non-discriminatory, so all forms of Bay life are sucked in and processed, doubtless leading to the collapse of various aquatic populations. Despite Maryland's penchant for heavy-handed regulations, these processors operate with relative impunity-can you say payoff?
Fish populations are of course cyclical, but "interventions" often lead to problems. We had a moratorium on Rockfish for nearly twenty years after overfishing, and the population rebounded mightily. Unfortunately, their favorite food is soft crab, so the dwindling Bay crab population was even more severely stressed. The laws of unintended consequences...
