Nah , I wouldn't doubt that there is an island culture out there somewhere that does something like this to preserve it. Sounds kind of like what Eskimos do with seal meat/blubber or Norwegians and lutefisk. I don't think I have the stomach to try it though.
I'll stick with bleeding sharks or fileting them ASAP.
