Cane poles, worms, scoopin' out water from the boat that stayed in the water most of the year...and dark warm bream; that would shoot a stream on you if you didn't watch out!
I remember when I got so I could paddle the boat without taking the paddle out of the water!
Dad loved to fish the upper Roanoke for rockfish and/or catfish. He grew up fishing the Roanoke River before there was ever a Kerr, Gaston, or Roanoke Rapids lake.
We fished Lewis Orr's pier down on Topsail and the sound pier(that's gone now) too. I remember folks with wheelbarrow loads of bluefish on the pier. Haven't seen many wheelbarrows on the pier lately! There's some expensive coolers out there though.
