we used to catch helgramites a lot too. We caught them two ways. One was by stretching a seine across a stretch of the the river and flipping rocks upstream from it. The other was flipping over rocks on the bank and finding them burrowed in the sand to change into their flying form. The second way was the way we found big ones and also "yellow" helgramites which were great for bait. Found a lot of copperheads that way too.

Used to catch a lot of softshell crawfish too.
