my dad and i would jump in the truck and head to mauertown, va. we would fish the north fork of the shenandoah river. we would catch our own bait on the riffles. we would turn rocks and catch hellgamites(a larva with big pinchers that would eventually leave the water and turn into a dobsonfly or some people called them snake doctors). we also caught madtoms(look like a small catfish, but they are a species all their own). so you usually got pinched or stuck by one or the other. the smallmouth bass loved them. we would always have hamburgers and pork and beans on the old camp stove. dad would pour the beans in the hamburger oil.(bet that was good for our hearts). we didn't care, it tasted great sitting on that old low water bridge. we would wade in our old tennis shoes and fish the holes between the rock ledges. we would catch green river perch, goggle eye(rock bass or red eye), and smallmouth bass. the river was alive with life. we always took home a nice mess of perch and red eye. we caught some nice smallmouth(3-4 lbs.) we always returned them back to the river. we never kept more than we could use. we took our trash home. slower and simplier times. most moms didn't work. they took care of us. we didn't watch much tv, we played outside from daylight to dark. we enjoyed life. not to many fat kids either, lol.
