Thinking about the way things used to be...

We're all getting older. Not trying to remind you guys or anything , but how did you learn to fish?
A lot of what I first learned is illegal now.
I can remember setting trot lines on the New River that would get you a fine now. We used to use the old brake shoes off of trains ( Grandpa was a Railroader ). We'd tie one to the end of the trot line and sink it at the top of the hole and then drift towards the other side adding hooks and bait. Once we got it out we tied another shoe to the end and sank it.
Now you have to tie it to the bank and mark them out in the water.
We used to drag a flat piece of iron behind the boat to pick up the line and it would often be full of catfish. Sounds bad now , but some of the best bait for cats back then was a Smallmouth bass around 10 inches.
That's probably the earliest memory I have of fishing with Dad.
