Thanks again for your thoughts on this.

The rig shown over at pier and surf is made the same way I was taught to make them. I normally use a smaller hook and I'm a big fan of green and white straws.

I think I've narrowed it down to tying the rig with Surgeon's loops like it's shown over there or tying it with Dropper loops and using a Uni or Palomar at the hook. You really can cut one side of a dropper loop without it slipping.

I've also been toying with the idea of tying a 25 lb leader on the flies and then making the rig out of 40. That would let you change the flies without tying the whole rig again.
