I tie just about all of my rigs as well. For the mackrel rig or straw rig you are refering to. I have been using 25# mono and using 4 drop loops. Then I slide the straws on the loops. To attach the hook I pinch down the loop and stick it through the eye of the hook. Then take that loop and pull the hook back up through the loop and then cinch the line back down on the eye of the hook. Kind of like a slip knot. Kind of hard to explain hope I didn't confuse anyone.
