You’re right King. By Wednesday there were 4 sets of breakers starting way out. My rule is … if 8oz isn’t holding, you’re probably not going to catch much. Effects from Franklin were just too much. Swell was up and the current was pulling north about as fast as I’ve seen it. The wife went to town on Wednesday & took my fishing licenses with her. Nobody really comes up this far north to check my NC license but on the VA side of the fence, I noticed a few close rips. I meant to say earlier that I’m NOT the best at reading waves but these rips were pretty easy to spot. As luck would have it, the Va park ranger came by and was removing signs in the dunes as prep for Idalia just to put them back in on Monday. I asked him if he was going to make me wait till my wife got back and he told me he wasn’t checking licenses that day and told me to have at it. Rigged up with a kastmaster and started working all the rips within casting distance and up to about 1/3 mile north of the fence. Had just enough bumps to keep me interested and saw at least one follow but nothing willing to jump on the hook. It’s just been that kind of week.

Feeling the full effects if Idalia today with some rain and lots of wind out of the NNE. Went down to the beach to check conditions at low tide and the water didn’t look too bad but the wind was blowing sand so hard I’ll bet you could strip the paint off my truck if I left it there long enough. It was actually painful to sand there. So I cleaned out the bait cooler and called it a week.

Things to note this trip… I bought a Penn Long Cast reel and put it on my 10’ rod. Not impressed at all with it. There is so much strain on your finger, the line will cut into you before you can cast any distance. Especially, if it’s loaded up with bait or lead. Haven’t found a conventional reel that I can cast without making a massive birds nest. I fish with some guys that use Penn Squalls and swear by them. May go that route.

Also forgot to mention on Tuesday, saw an osprey grab a fish out of the water right next to my line that appeared to be in the 12-14” range. Always gotta give the better fisherman props.

I’m usually back down here mid October but also have cataract surgery in a few weeks. Have to wait and see if I can make it.
