Well, Chamber of Commerce doesn't advertise about gators and snakes. Aside from 2nd and 3rd hand stories, here's couple of facts...
Gators were found in small pond next to Hatteras lighthouse when it was moved, also big one run over couple years ago crossing Rt.64 just north of Manns Harbor.
Watch for the cottonmouths too, soundside. Not too many years ago one of the soundside watersport activities had to be closed due to the heavy infestation.
If you wade the sounds at least wear shoes. Cut shells and glass.
Duck and most northern and southern surf areas May - August used to give up 50 per person morning and evening even up to 10 years ago. Thats all changed now. Pick your reason: commercial overfishing, farm run off, etc.
Also, (IMHO) take advice from tackle shops w/ grain of salt. They're there to sell. Before you invest in more exotic baits, suggest starting w/ shrimp (fresh if you can get it (like at Food Lion on the way in) and squid (any tackle store) and artificial bloodworms (tackle store or Wal Mart on the way in.) Best bet is to fish early mornings and early evenings ( + vacationers will be on the beach in btw those times). Cast metal early mornings if water is clear. Don't pay much attention to tides.
Have great trip and post back and share your experience.
