As for wade fishing in the sound behind duck it is considered freshwater so you may need a freshwater license but I am not 100% sure becasue I have heard rumor that the Coastal Recreational license covers that area. I have seen while walking along the sound and kayaking it some pretty decent sized bass back there but thats all. Also watch out for either crocs or gators I cant remember which exactly have been seen along the OBX. For surf fishing, I have found it to be hit or miss in Duck in the 11 years ive been fishing the area. Some years its great and I catch lots of blues and bottom fish and some years it sucks big time. Definitely talk to the guys at Bobs Bait and Tackle or if you get up to the Corolla area TW's they're all super nice people and very knowledgeable.
