I know a lot of guys that swear by circle hooks and kahle hooks , but my experience with them has been much like yours.

With the circle hooks , you're not really supposed to set the hook , but rather let the fish's steady pull set it for you. I've fished for so long that setting the hook is automatic so it's really hard for me to not do it when I get a bite.
