Today a good day to reflect on beach memories from 33 past years. To share a few....

Remember:

This Capt who had never taken family on a vacation, having two glasses of wine, and agreeing (much to the amazement of Mrs. Capt) to sharing a rental at a place called the Outer Banks on a street named Olde Duck Beach. (No phone, no TV!!)

The blues running so thick you pulled em out of the surf like tuna. Kids on the beach fillin 5 gallon buckets as fast as you could haul em in? (Bit of a funny on last time it happened...traveled down the beach about 1/2 mile followin the school. Exhausted, walked back to original spot only to find all the kids, buckets and fish were no where to be seen!!!!!)

Aquarium size black angelfish in the surf so thick you could just grabem up by hand.

Catchin "Stargazers" w/ no idea what they were, and that they carried a charge!

A mixed bag of 50 fish was the norm morning and evening.

Literally bumpin into the horses on foggy mornings.

Herds stopping under the house for their afternoon siestas.

Drivin past a bobcat along 12 on west side of 12 in Ocean Sands at 0200 hrs.

Rental Co. going belly up w/ all rental $$. (Bailed out by different Co., one of the Riggs girls at Riggs Realty, a young lady we didn't even know)!!!

Son latchin onto Manta Ray. Dragged down beach 1/2 mile. Callin for help on "walkie".

Daughter steppin on hook. Fireman friend carryin her 1/4 mile back to us, where son (ER doc) performed surgery on the spot. (She was back in water the same day).

Volleyball tournaments, including beating team w/ an olympic player. (Still have the trophy.)

Family being mistaken for devil worshippers while celebrating this Capt's birthday on the beach.

Wandering grounds of the Whalehead Club. Abandoned, and pristine in its history.

Digging out friends sunk to the quarter panels on sand roads.

The guard shack on 12 just north of Sanderling, and that you couldn't get past unless owner or had a lease in hand.

Day crabs ran up strings out of the water 20 ft, right to kids hands (and buckets of course.) (52 keepers that day).

Layin out on upper decks at night, seein stars (and UFO's of course). (No one left lights on outside then)

Never locking house or vehicles when away.

Letting the kids go for walks alone after dark. (One of those dark nights, daughter didn't come back for hours. Sheriff called. Family frantic. She had found a lost little boy on the beach and was tryin to find his families rental.)

Daughters wedding on the beach and reception at the Tranquility Inn restaurant in Manteo.

Son asking wife to be to marry him...while the whole family watched from the dunes (in the dark) and shooting off fireworks when she said "Yes".

"Visitor" setting dunes on fire w/ fireworks and how took about 30 volunteers to put it out.

"Visitor" mother frantically looking for her 3 yr. old boy after she ignored him for an hour, and he wandered away about 1/2 mile down the beach. (Were able to reunite them.)

"Visitors" too lazy to walk kids back to rentals, tellin em to just walk to the dune and "relieve" themselves.

Bailing out extended Vietnamese family from discrimination by other "visitors", and becoming best friends. (They were among the last to leave during the fall of Saigon).

Bad beach days turned into fun days w/ things like tug o war w/ washed up mooring line, life size sand sculpures of whales, cars, giant gators etc.

Cluster lightening storm overhead, w/ strikes hitting homes and beach for hours.

Yes.... a few of the memories of this Capt and crew. Some saved on VHS tape, and some just stored in our hearts. They were the "Best of Times".

Heres hopin we (and you guys) have many, many more to come!
