Steve, I have found that the 12' heavers work best in late fall when big drum,stripers and big blues are in the mix. September is prime time for yellow belly spot in the surf, often up close, and this is great fun with light tackle. Bloodworms or fishbites are what I use. For trout, I like a 3/8 oz. red jig with a chartruse grub. You can rig up 2 on the line if you want. The other guys who have responded are very, very knowledgable...they have given good advice.
