I don't have the experience of most of the folks who will offer advice here. However, one suggestion I have is to add a lighter rod to your arsenal. I fish the big rods, too, but I spend more and more time with a 7' rod and a reel loaded with 14lb mono. Sometimes, with the heavy tackle, you aren't sure whether you have a fish until you see it flopping on the sand. The lighter tackle is a blast and can put some good eating fish in the cooler. I like to chunk out a spot head, bunker, etc. on the big gear and loosen the drag to allow a fish to run without pulling the rod/spike. While I'm waiting on the big guy i fish with the light tackle in hand.
