Surf fishing - essential tackle

I'll be making my second trip to Ocracoke in September and would like to try my hand at surf fishing. I have a 12' surf rod setup with 50lb. braid, but am fairly in the dark about essentials. What should I pick up in the way of sinkers (style and weight), swivels, hooks, etc? I of course plan to visit the local tackle shops when I'm down there, but I'd like to at least have some of the basics before I head down.
