It depends on what kind of fishing you plan to do , reel size etc.
I use braid on one rod and it's the one I use to throw lures. For all of my bottom fishing and live baiting I use 14 , 17 or 20 mono. I save the fluorocarbon for leaders because it is a bear to handle when it's cold outside.
17 is probably the "compromise" size mono. It gives you a little more line capacity than 20 , but a little more strength than 14. I will say that I've seen some darn big fish caught on 14 , it just makes me nervous.
I don't recommend fishing in a crowd with braid. At the point or at the end of the pier if you happen to get a big fish or a tangle the braid will cut everyone else's line. It'll also tear your hands up if you have to hand line something up on a pier. The high vis mono is great if you're in a crowd.
