Yes she feels safe in it, however, I would pick a nice calm day for the maiden voyage. You can only make a first impression once, if you know what I mean. After that initial success you can build on new adventures. The scupper plugs do keep the water out. It's more like a canoe than an ocean kayak when they're in place. I've decided to use canoe paddles (or the halves of one of the kayak paddles) when I float smaller streams and rivers. We also got an anchor and it really kept us in the channel at Little Bridge this fall. We had good success catching 13" trout.
