Not real sure about saltwater bait, but in fresh a drastic change in ph levels or temp, will make your shiners or fathead minnows go belly up.Best to keep them in the water you caught them in and keep close to the temp they were in.I think the ph factor is probably important, for keeping any live bait long term.If the water goes to acid. Below 6.5 will probably kill them. It comes from to much fish waste in the water or if your feeding them too much food that they can't eat and starts to degrade.Just llke an aquarium.You can buy a ph test kit at any pet shop to test it.Baking soda will raise the ph.I know from experance most salt fish require a ph of at least 7.0 or its belly up.
