I agree , but be sure to get an aerator that is made out of a bilge pump. They have a foam filter on the bottom and a piece of pvc with a spray head on top. You can shorten the pvc until the head sits just above the water in the cooler.
Changing the water is really important. If you're catching them with a cast net I recommend putting them in a bucket first and sorting through the bait for the size you are wanting. A lot of bait dies/gets wasted because of people trying to keep too many. Putting them in a bucket first also reduces the slime that they make when they're stressed - it rinses off in the bucket.
Before I had livewells on my boat we used to add rock salt to our cooler of bait ( just a little ) , but this was for freshwater gizzard shad. I have no idea if it would help with finger mullet or not , maybe someone else will know.
