Been hunting morel mushrooms since i was big enough to go with my dad. colors range from black to tan brown. mostly black in woods and mountains. tan in apple orchards. sometimes tan in mountains after black ones. once you know what they are, it's almost impossible to get the wrong one. around here they are usually found around popular trees in the woods. have found them around ash and walnut. orchards have the bigger tan ones, but beware of poison spraying. if i hunt orchards, i usually hunt old ones that are not being used, but the trees are still alive. found 23 big ones one time under one tree. the black ones come up first followed by tan. usually come up in April thru the 1st. of May. if you hunt them you should collect them in an onion bag or something with tiny holes in it. the seed or spores will drop on ground as you are walking around. once the seed hits the ground it takes 5 years for it to come up. so the ones you find are 5 years old. good luck!
