Well I always have a long heaver and a smaller rod for fishing in short to cover all the bases. I rigged up a small 7 ft penn spinfisher with a penn ss5500 with 10lb mono & 3 oz sinker with fresh cut cob mullet for my nephew who was about 10 at the time and he caught most of the fish. If I recall, the trout were a bit further out. Most of the drum will be in close in the slough behind the first breaker. A fishing buddy of mine once caught a 53" citation drum fishing for bait in less than knee deep water on a piece of fish bites crab. So you never know.

I only fished that jetty once and it was a long long walk up and back on a hot summer day and all I did is replace rigs. Its not the best place to bottom fish and more suited to jigs and lures. I'd try that on an outgoing tide. I measured on google and its about 0.6 miles from the parking lot. I have a few places like that that I fish up here in Delaware and a tackle backpack comes in handy.

Before you set off in the Yak in unfamiliar waters there are a few safety precautions. Always always always check the weather and the tides. when the tide and the wind and the tide oppose each other, it can make the water like a washing machine. Nothing I hate more going out yak fishing and getting a face full of water every time you paddle into the wind. Make sure you go out with someone. Make sure you can easily paddle to a safe place before being pushed out into deep water when battling the wind and the tide. Most importantly, make sure you can self rescue.

As far a yak fishing, Ive only done it once down that way and launched by the CG station at OI. MY fish finder wasn't working right so I had a lot of trouble finding the channels and only caught some pinfish. I've been told the Propeller Slough by the OI fishing center is decent and the slough behind Bodie island (Just watch for snakes). If you find a place to launch by the Wright Memorial Bridge, I'd give that a play. Another Place is around the pilings at OI. Go catch some fiddler crabs or pick up some sand fleas and see if you can't get some sheepshead or tautog.

If you really want to get into some fish with the Yak, I'd book a kayak fishing charter. It not that expensive and and the knowledge you get will be valuable for years to come and will easily pay for itself. I've wanted to do one myself for years but its just such a long haul from my place in Carova its hard for me to leave fish right out front than travel 1.5 Hours each way.

Also try Tidalfish.com. There are a lot of yakkers that fish down KDH & Nags Head way and post reports. Search the forums and you'll find what you need.

If you can get to the wright memorial, you might want to take a crab trap or two and see what you get. Its like the deadliest catch. when a crab gets loose in the Yak, the first place they like to hide is between your legs. Just no sudden movements and you'll be fine.

Hope this helps
