I have yet to try it out on a Holiday Weekend but from what I've seen its working well. I've haven't seen the Carova beach that organized in a long time. The main thing I noticed was the increase sheriff patrols that I think helped people parking where they are supposed to be. Two well defined paths for ingress and egress. Went to town and back a few times and it was a breeze.
I'm not sure anymore but I was told you can still drive as far south as the Duck Research Pier. There is a gate at the southern end of the Carova beach. They used to unlock in mid Sept. or Oct. it and you could travel to the south as far as Duck. I also think there is an access ramp behind the Corolla Food Lion. Its been years since I fished down that way so I don't know if its still open. I used to fish all over the banks and sometimes travel as far south as Rodanthe to fish for stipers the week of thanksgiving. That ended after a day of fishing down at Coquina and I caught nothing only to travel back to the house and see a guy putting two 40" bass in his truck about 300 Yds from the house. No matter how tempting it is to fish to the south, I'll stick with my hole in front of the house.
