I agree , Tom , definitely an interesting post , and it's good to be back to talking fishing :):)
Captain Lenny knows his stuff , but I'll throw a couple of ways I've fished shrimp out there too , just for the sake of discussion.
I've caught tons of fish just buying bags of frozen EZPeel (uncooked) shrimp - the 41-50 count. Catch them on sale up here for $4.99-$6.99 , buy two bags and let them thaw in the cooler on the way down to the beach and then I'll have bait when I get there without having to look for it. I actually used to keep a few bags in the freezer , just in case I had a chance to slip down for a weekend to fish or if I wanted something on the grill in the middle of the night. I used those on bottom rigs with size 1 or 2 hooks , one per hook , peeled and threaded on the hook so they looked curled up on the hook and covered it. Or I've used smaller hooks (size 4 or 5 , maybe) and peeled the shrimp , cut them into 3 or 4 pieces - where the "joints" are in the shell is where I cut them , even though it probably doesn't matter. The smaller pieces work better for pompano and spot , and if you're using snelled hooks the "spinner" kind with little spinner blades and a piece of shrimp will catch blues and trout. I really like the spinner snells sometimes , seems to improve your catch a lot some days especially if it's overcast but the water is still fairly clear.
With whole fresh shrimp , I've used them on bottom rigs with the tail on one hook and the head on the other , plus all of the above and chummed with the heads like Lenny mentioned. Another way is to fish them on a Carolina rig whole. I hook them like I do softshell crawfish - down through the tail , half a turn then up into their body leaving the hook buried in their belly. I like bigger Khale or Octopus hooks (the kind in the picture , not the Octopus Circle hooks) - caught some of my better flounder on shrimp this way. Those Octopus hooks have a little offset , and I've had really good luck with the ones I have.
Looking forward to the reports , Lenny!
