I think back when that breach opened up this last time, they had talked about rebuilding the dunes, but historically it's just a weak spot where the currents or whatever likes to punch through during a good blow, about like the S curves/ Mirlo beach area right above Rodanthe. I think the "long bridge" option was supposed to be the permanent fix for it, too, but it's bogged down in court again. Or at least it was last I heard. Good thing the manufacturer of the bridge has a loose definition of temporary. I think someone mentioned 15-20 years? The state wants a real bridge in a bad way for the tourist dollars and the locals, but NPS and federal rules allow the special interest groups to drag things out forever. It's ridiculous to the point that I've quit trying to figure it all out, even though it breaks my heart for year round residents.
It's a pipe dream of mine, and probably totally impossible, but I've wondered if the state or Dare county could pull some eminent domain trickery and seize land from the NPS and or the federal government to get around the red tape somehow to get the ball rolling on a permanent fix. Wouldn't that be a hoot? :):)
