Is she making the Apple Pie kind or just straight apple? I've had it both ways , either is good , but the apple pie is a little too sweet for me.
JimmyC - Lots of ways you can make it with about any kind of fruit and clear liquor. Most people used to get a 1/2 gallon of cheap shine and 2 gallons of fresh fruit. Wash the fruit , cut and peel it if necessary , split it into 4 1/2 gallon jars add (rough estimate here) 1/2-3/4 cups of sugar and top it off with shine. I always heard you had to shake it gently (or turn it over if you trust the lids on the jars) every couple of days until the sugar dissolved. Seemed like the longer it sat the better it was , and certain fruit did almost make it taste like wine , just with a lot more kick. It's been years since I've had any , but I might try to make some now that the legal shine is available in liquor stores here in VA. The kind made with Damsons was always my favorite.
A long time ago , a good friend of mine had a little still and he would take wine that didn't turn out the best and cook it off. It was good stuff , especially the few times I had strawberry/peach wine that wouldn't clear up. I carried a little flask of that with me on a lot of cold mornings Striper fishing. Not that it really warmed me up , I just didn't mind being cold after a few sips.
