The stuff at the bottom is just spent yeast that settles out of the beer as it clears up. It can cause you to have upset stomach if you over imbibe, but it's otherwise harmless.
Nothing at all wrong with a Mr.Beer kit. Some of the ingredient kits actually make really good beer, plus they are small if you don't want to make it in 5 gallon batches. I'll have to look it up, but one of the brewing websites had a conversion widget that you could use to scale down recipes from the standard 5 or 6.5 gallons that most home brewers use to smaller sizes that would work in your Mr. Beer equipment. If there's a good supply store down your way, its a lot cheaper to buy your malt by the pound and get enough hops and yeast for several batches at a time.
Of course, it's just like fishing, some people get really into it and spend a small fortune on equipment and supplies. :-):-)
