We come from NY and always stay for a week in a soundfront house in Rodanthe. My brother-in-law and I wade out as far as we can, I'd say it's gotta be a half mile or so. We cast popping corks with lead head/Fishbites Shrimp combo. Use just long enough leader so the bait hangs close to bottom but not on. Short jerks, pause, repeat. We usually have good luck with the specks (trout) and some decent puppy drums. Also quite a few smallish flounder. Wade out until you get to patches of grass and a little deeper water, about chest deep or so. Be aware that there are lots of jellyfish and stingrays. Shuffle your feet along the bottom and walk slowly so as not to step on a stingray. I was stung in the hand a couple years back and believe me, you DO NOT want to experience that. I am by no means an expert sound fisherman, but we always do pretty good around July/August. This year we will be there the first week of June. Not sure what to expect that time of year. Good Luck!
