Weather changes over the years.

Winter seems to be out of sync the last few years here. Usually the first 3 weeks of January have been the coldest part of winter. January was kind of mild this past year and then we had a really cold spring. One year it never really got real cold and another year the worst part was in the middle of December, ice formed around the edges of the sound which has become rare and a lot of speckled trout died in the sound in that cold snap. Before that winter tended to be normal but colder the further back you went in time. Remember the good striper fishing at Oregon Inlet, now most of the Chesapeake Bay stripers are staying further north.
In the old days from what I remember back when the schools of big bluefish were around the winters were a lot colder and ice forming on the sound was common, it used to destroy the homeowners piers. Also used to have bad tornados / water spouts, more so and worst than nowadays. I remember standing outside one day in April back then on the beach side watching three tall at least F-4 size water spouts over the sound at the same time and hoping one didn't come this way. A couple of those I remember was one that killed a lady that tried to hide in a ditch and a refrigerator landed on her, another hit Jockeys Ridge one day and dumped all its water out flooding the road really bad.
They still happen, I knew somebody from Florida from fishing on the beach that used to come here and had just bought a brand new expensive truck bed camper and was showing it off. He was staying at the NPS campground at Oregon Inlet when a tornado / water spout hit the campground at night. He said he was asleep in the camper and woke up in a cactus patch with his little dog, his truck camper was gone just pieces left. The storm didn't do any other damage except for knocking over some tents. I saw his box spring bed washed up north of Ramp 4 later on, it stayed on the beach for about two weeks. I never saw him again.
